Al-Zahir Barquq was the first Circassian (Burji) Mamluk sultan, seizing power in 792 AH after overthrowing the last Turkic Qalawunid line — a dynastic rupture that reshuffled administrative appointments across the sultanate, including at provincial mints like Halab. The Aleppo mint's output during his reign reflects the fiscal pressures of a ruler consolidating power against repeated Yalbugha faction revolts, with copper fals production serving the street markets of greater Syria when silver was being hoarded or melted.
Balog's corpus remains the essential reference for Mamluk copper, though Halab fals of this type are underrepresented in major collection records.
