Obverse description A central circular hole is surrounded by a radiating star-burst or toothed ring motif composed of alternating raised ribs and a beaded inner border. The legend ALUMINIUM is inscribed in an arc above the central hole, flanked by the initials T and M to the left and right respectively, with the date 1891 appearing below. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded outer border. This uniface essai was produced to demonstrate the properties and suitability of aluminium as a coinage metal.
