Obverse description A francisque — a stylised Frankish battle-axe whose handle is formed by a marshal's baton — is depicted upright in the centre of the field. The handle is decorated with ten five-pointed stars, and the blade bears the inscription S. PACIS above and PETAIN below. Two ears of wheat flank the device on either side, and the engraver's initials LB appear to the right of the axe. The overall design reflects the Vichy State's iconographic programme under Marshal Pétain.
