Obverse description Central device consisting of a caduceus entwined by two coiled serpents, surmounted by a Phrygian cap symbolizing liberty, and flanked on either side by a palm branch. A divided circular legend reads 'VIVE LA - LIBERTE' around the periphery, with a lower legend in the exergue area reading 'L'AN I. BR DE LA REPUB. FRAN.' This essai, invented by Brézin, showcases the revolutionary iconography characteristic of early French Republican coinage of 1792.
