Reverse description The elaborate Portuguese royal arms displayed on an ornate baroque cartouche, surmounted by an imperial crown. The shield bears the traditional quinas of Portugal with the bordure of castles, rendered in high relief. Elaborate foliate and scroll ornamentation frames the cartouche on all sides, with no legend present in the field, the entire design consistent with the grand baroque style employed on Portuguese gold coinage of the Maria I and Pedro III joint reign.
