Obverse description Central field depicts a large royal crown rendered in high relief, surmounted by fleurs-de-lis and cross finials, set within a raised inner circle. Beneath the crown, the royal cypher or mint letter appears in Gothic characters within a cartouche. The design is enclosed by a beaded inner border, with the Latin legend running continuously around the periphery between two concentric borders. The striking is characteristic of mid-fifteenth-century Portuguese hammered gold coinage, with bold, deeply incised devices typical of the Lisbon and Porto workshops.
