Obverse description A rampant lion facing left occupies the central field, brandishing a sword upward in its right forepaw and grasping a crozier in its left; the crozier bears a small oval shield of Bouillon. The surrounding legend in Latin identifies the issuer as Ferdinand, by the grace of God Archbishop of Cologne and Prince Elector. The design is rendered in the bold, slightly irregular style characteristic of hammered coinage of the southern Netherlands in the first half of the seventeenth century.
