The "Servus Europa" ECU series was issued in the early 1990s as Austria prepared for EU accession, which would come in 1995. These pieces are commemorative medals struck to the ECU denomination standard — a unit of account used by the European Community before the euro — rather than legal tender coins in any practical sense. Robert Edler von Musil, the Austro-Hungarian novelist best known for the unfinished The Man Without Qualities, is an unusual choice for a pan-European monetary theme, though his work's preoccupation with the disintegration of empire carries its own irony here.
