Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Louis XIV wearing a large flowing wig, executed in the grand royal portrait style characteristic of the late 17th-century French coinage. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the drapery folds and periwig curls. The circumferential legend, engraved by Joseph Roëtters, commences at approximately the seven o'clock position (19 h). The field is smooth and unadorned, focusing attention on the royal portrait.
