| Reverse description | A crowned royal shield, party per pale, bears on the dexter half the arms of France (azure, three fleurs-de-lis or) and on the sinister half the impaled arms of Navarre (gules, a cross floriated or) and Béarn (or, two cows passant gules), surmounted by a large fleur-de-lis crown of France in high relief. The Latin pious legend encircles the shield, with the date 1681 incorporated into the legend. The composition reflects the special provincial status of Béarn, whose estates retained the right to a distinct coinage. |
