Greece never adopted the ECU as legal tender — this is a fantasy or medal issue, produced commercially in the late 1990s to capitalize on European monetary unification enthusiasm ahead of the euro's 1999 launch. Dozens of firms across Europe issued similar gold-plated pieces bearing ECU denominations for countries that had no official ECU coinage program. None were sanctioned by the Greek government or the European Monetary Institute.
