Additional information

Greece issued this ECU piece in 1992 as part of the wave of non-circulating legal tender ECU coinage produced by European nations ahead of the Maastricht Treaty, signed that same year, which formally established the path toward a single currency. The ECU itself was never a circulating currency — it existed as a basket unit used in European financial settlements — making these national issues a peculiar category: legal tender denominated in a unit the issuing country's citizens could never spend.

Greece would go on to adopt the euro in 2001, the ECU converting at a fixed 1:1 rate to the new currency.
