The Debussy 20 Francs series was produced entirely in-house at the Banque de France's own printing works in Chamalières — one of the few central banks in the world to maintain full sovereign control over its note production from design through finished sheet. The word "échantillon" designates this as an official specimen or reference sample, distributed internally for training and verification purposes rather than released into circulation. Specimens of this series were produced with the Athéna watermark configuration under review during the mid-to-late 1980s as the Banque evaluated security upgrades across the short-format denominations.

The 20 Francs Debussy ran from 1980 through 1997, making it one of the longer-lived French notes before euro convergence.
