Jan II Kazimierz struck these double ducats at Poznań during one of the most financially ruinous stretches in Commonwealth history — the closing years of the Second Northern War, compounded by the Deluge, had drained the treasury and wrecked the monetary system. Gold issues from this period were effectively emergency prestige coinage, circulating among creditors and foreign merchants while the copper boratynki flooding domestic markets destroyed confidence in everyday exchange.
The Poznań mint's output for this type was limited, and the two Kop references reflect distinct die pairings across the 1661–62 production run rather than separate issues.
