Struck in the immediate aftermath of the Jewish War, this issue belongs to a concentrated propaganda campaign Vespasian launched to legitimize a dynasty that had no hereditary claim to power — only a successful military campaign and the backing of the eastern legions. The Senate's formal recognition in late 69 AD needed reinforcing, and coin output from Rome's mint in 71 served that purpose relentlessly.

RIC II.1 1154 is among the better-documented Vespasianic bronze types from the post-Judaea triumph period, the S C formula confirming senatorial authorization of the orichalcum issue.
