| Obverse description | Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Trajan facing right, rendered with strong portraiture characteristic of the Trajanic period. The emperor wears a radiate crown — the standard identifier distinguishing the dupondius from the as — along with a paludamentum (military cloak) visible at the shoulder. The encircling Latin legend reads IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM P M, running clockwise around the periphery of the flan. The portrait is boldly modeled in high relief, displaying Trajan's characteristic strong jawline and close-cropped hair beneath the rays. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hand-struck Roman aes coinage of this period. |
