Obverse description Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Trajan facing right, rendered in high relief in the prevailing Trajanic portrait style. The emperor wears a radiate crown, distinguishing this denomination as a dupondius rather than a sestertius or as. Paludamentum is visible at the left shoulder, conveying imperial military authority. The encircling legend runs from lower left to right along the coin's periphery in incuse Latin capitals.

Additional information

The "ROMA REST" reverse type belongs to Trajan's restoration series, a deliberate numismatic program in which he reissued coinage types associated with earlier emperors — in this case evoking the prestige of Rome personified as a continuous imperial ideal rather than any single reign. The series is generally dated to the middle years of his reign, coinciding with the period of maximum territorial expansion following the Dacian Wars.

RIC II 474 is among the more frequently encountered restoration dupondii, though the series as a whole was not struck in volumes comparable to standard issues.
