| Obverse description | Bare head of Tiberius facing left, rendered in a restrained, classicizing portrait style typical of Julio-Claudian provincial coinage. The emperor's features are sharply defined, with a strong jaw and close-cropped hair. A continuous Latin legend encircles the portrait within the field, reading clockwise from lower left. The flan is somewhat irregular in shape, as is characteristic of hammered provincial bronzes of this period. |

This issue dates to 21 AD, the year of the Tacfarinas War's most dangerous phase — a prolonged Numidian uprising that forced Tiberius to extend Q. Junius Blaesus's proconsular command beyond its normal term, an exceptional honor the emperor rarely granted. The coin's obverse authority inscription naming Blaesus directly reflects that elevated status. Blaesus was also the uncle of Sejanus, a relationship that likely smoothed his extended tenure in Africa before both men fell from imperial favor within a decade.
