Additional information

This dupondius belongs to the seminal coinage reform of 23–17 BC, when Augustus restructured the Roman monetary system by delegating bronze and orichalcum coinage to a board of mint magistrates — the tresviri aetere argento auro flando feriundo. P. Licinius Stolo was one of the magistrates appointed under this arrangement, his name appearing prominently as part of Augustus's deliberate policy of advertising senatorial cooperation with the new regime. The S·C on the reverse was not a constitutional formality but a pointed signal: the Senate, nominally, still controlled the bronze.
