| Obverse description | Laureate, draped bust of Emperor Hadrian facing right, the paludamentum visible over the left shoulder with drapery folds rendered in fine detail. The portrait displays Hadrian's characteristic short curly beard and hair, executed in the refined Hellenistic style favoured during his reign. The imperial effigy is presented as a bust truncation, viewed from the rear or side, emphasising the cuirass or drapery beneath the laureate wreath. The surrounding field carries the Latin legend HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P disposed around the obverse in a continuous arc. The portrait demonstrates the high artistic quality associated with the Roman Imperial mint during the mature Hadrianic period. |
