| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of Emperor Hadrian facing right, with his characteristic short curly hair and clipped beard rendered in fine detail, the portrait executed in the restrained Hellenistic classicising style typical of his reign. The emperor is depicted with a draped and cuirassed bust, the drapery visible at the truncation of the shoulder. The surrounding field carries the imperial legend in Latin capitals along the coin's periphery. The portrait conveys the idealized yet individualised likeness for which Hadrianic coinage is celebrated. |
