| Reverse description | Hadrian, togate and standing left, extends his right hand to raise a kneeling personification of Sicily (Sicilia), who wears a distinctive triskeles headdress symbolising the three capes of the island and holds ears of corn in her hand, alluding to the island's celebrated agricultural fertility. The emperor holds a scroll in his left hand, signifying his beneficent administrative role as restorer of the province. The composition belongs to the celebrated 'Restitutor' series of Hadrianic bronze coinage, commemorating the emperor's travels and benefactions throughout the empire. The exergual field carries the senatorial authority mark S C (Senatus Consultum), standard on Roman aes coinage of this period. |
