Hadrian holds a scroll or volumen in his left hand. The composition conveys the imperial ideology of benevolent restoration, a recurring theme in Hadrian's provincial restitutio coinage. The encircling legend and senatorial mark S C are partially visible around the periphery of the heavily worn and patinated flan. |

The "Restitutori" series issued under Hadrian reflects his unprecedented tour of the provinces between 121 and 132 AD — a circuit no reigning emperor had undertaken on such a scale. Separate types honoring individual provinces, Gallia among them, were struck to commemorate his visits and the benefactions, whether infrastructure, remitted taxes, or military reorganization, that accompanied them.
Gallia received particular attention given its strategic road network and ongoing recruitment significance for the Rhine legions.
