Hadrian's FELICITAS P R programs of the early 130s were closely tied to his extensive provincial tours — the most ambitious undertaken by any emperor — which he used to demonstrate Roman prosperity and military stability to the provinces directly. The felicitas theme on coinage of this period functioned as a political counter-narrative to anxieties surrounding his lack of a clear successor and the Parthian border situation. Whether this piece is a dupondius or as remains unresolved without metallurgical analysis, as surface patination on many survivors obscures the orichalcum distinction.
