Hadrian's ANNONA AVG types from 133–135 belong to a concentrated propaganda effort in his final years, when deteriorating health and the political turbulence surrounding his succession — culminating in his controversial adoption of Aelius Caesar in 136 — made visible demonstrations of imperial stability increasingly important. The annona, Rome's grain supply system, was a genuine political pressure point: disruptions to Egyptian or North African shipments could destabilize the city within weeks.
RIC II.3 2143 remains difficult to attribute with confidence to dupondius or as without direct examination, as surface patination on many bronzes obscures the original orichalcum or copper distinction that die studies alone cannot resolve.
