| Reverse description | The reverse depicts two clasped hands (dextrarum iunctio) holding a legionary aquila (eagle standard) set upon a prow, symbolizing the concordance between the emperor and the military forces. The senatorial authorization marks S and C (Senatus Consultum) are placed in the lower field to either side of the central device. The legend CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM encircles the design along the rim, referencing Nerva's effort to establish harmony with the Roman armies following the turbulent end of Domitian's reign. The composition is typical of the propagandistic reverse types struck early in Nerva's brief reign to legitimize his authority with the legions. |
