| Obverse description | Radiate head of Nero facing right, rendered in the portraiture style characteristic of his later reign, with heavy neck and idealized facial features. The emperor's effigy is depicted with a radiate crown, a convention used on the dupondius to distinguish it from the as. The circumferential legend reads NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P in raised Latin capitals, encircling the portrait from left to right. The fields show the dark patination and surface wear typical of circulated bronze coinage of the Neronian period. The overall style reflects the die-cutting workshops of the Rome Mint during the AD 60s. |
