| Reverse description | Frontal architectural elevation of the Macellum Magnum, Nero's great market building on the Caelian Hill in Rome, rendered in careful perspective with a central domed rotunda flanked by colonnaded wings and a broad flight of steps ascending to the entrance. A male figure stands to the left atop the steps, depicted in full length holding a sceptre, likely representing the emperor or a presiding deity. The exergue bears the numeral II, and the field carries the legend MAC AVG flanked by the large senatorial mark of value S C. This reverse type is historically significant as one of the few Roman coin types to depict a specific contemporary building in such architectural detail. |
