Additional information

Struck in 79 AD, this dupondius belongs to the final months of Vespasian's reign, when Domitian held the honorific title PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS — a designation marking him as heir presumptive, though the succession ultimately passed first through his brother Titus. Vespasian died in June of that year, and coins bearing this titulature for Domitian were being produced almost simultaneously with the elder emperor's death coinage. The title was largely ceremonial; Domitian held no meaningful military or administrative command during these years, a frustration he made no effort to conceal.
