| Reverse description | The personification of Annona, goddess of the grain supply, is depicted seated to the right on a throne or chair, her body draped in flowing robes. She extends her right hand forward holding a sack or fold of garment containing corn-ears, symbolising the imperial grain dole, while behind her to the right a ship's stern (aplustre or acrostolium) is visible, alluding to the maritime transport of grain to Rome. A small subsidiary figure stands to the right in the field, possibly a modius-bearer or attendant. The composition is rendered in the confident, slightly rigid style of Flavian reverse engraving, with the large senatorial authorisation mark S C (Senatus Consultum) prominently placed in the field. |
