Reverse description The reverse features the large senatorial authorisation monogram S·C (Senatus Consultum) prominently displayed in the central field, with the letters rendered in bold relief. The moneyer's legend M MAECILIVS TVLLVS IIIVIR A A A F F encircles the field, distributed around the periphery of the coin in Latin capitals. This design, typical of the Augustan aes coinage reform, emphasises the role of the Senate in authorising bronze coinage.

Additional information

This piece belongs to the municipal coinage struck at Rome under the tresviri monetales — the board of three magistrates responsible for mint administration. M. Maecilius Tullus held this position in 7 BC, one of the last years the monetales exercised meaningful independent authority before Augustus progressively absorbed minting prerogatives into the imperial apparatus. The magistrates' names continued appearing on the bronze for a few years yet, but their functional independence was already largely ceremonial by this point.
