Additional information

By 1796, Bern was less than three years from political extinction — French forces would dissolve the ancient republic in 1798, ending over five centuries of Bernese sovereignty and shutting down its mint permanently. This duplone, struck in the final active years of the city's independent coinage, belongs to a very short window of production. The HMZ variety 213h designation places it among the later die states of the type.
