| Obverse description | Central field depicts the mythological scene of Hercules lifting and suspending Antaeus, rendered in high relief in the vigorous late-fifteenth-century Italian style. The muscular figure of Hercules is shown in full length, straining as he hoists the giant Antaeus off the ground, depriving him of his earth-derived strength. The figures occupy nearly the entire flan, with the circular Latin legend surrounding them in the field. The design reflects the deliberate dynastic identification of Duke Ercole I d'Este with his classical namesake. |
