Obverse description Frontal crowned bust of King Joan II of Aragon, facing the viewer, wearing a jewelled crown and draped in a mantle with visible drapery folds rendered in a Gothic style. The king holds a sceptre to his left and an orb to his right, both partially visible at the shoulders. The mint mark 'C' for Zaragoza appears to the right of the bust within the inner beaded border. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads IOANNES DEI GRACIA REX ARAGONVM, separated from the central type by a continuous beaded circle. The engraving is characteristic of late 15th-century Aragonese hammered gold coinage.
