Obverse description Within a beaded inner circle, the enthroned Madonna is depicted facing forward, holding the Christ child, and seated upon a crescent moon — a Marian iconographic motif consistent with Netherlandish ecclesiastical coinage. The arms of Brederode appear in the field below the central device. The surrounding Latin legend is separated from the inner circle by a beaded border. The overall style reflects the hammered gold coinage tradition of the mid-sixteenth century Low Countries.
