| Reverse description | Central device consisting of the Basel crozier (the episcopal staff, symbol of the city of Basel) displayed within an ornate oval cartouche or wreath of laurel and scrollwork in high relief. Surrounding the central motif, a circular peripheral legend in Roman capital letters reads DOMINE CONSERVA NOS IN PACE (Lord, preserve us in peace), separated by a small rosette stop. The composition reflects the strong civic and ecclesiastical identity of the Free City of Basel and is executed in the Baroque decorative idiom typical of Swiss cantonal gold coinage of the mid-seventeenth century. |
