| Obverse description | Full-length figure of Saint Maurice, the canton's patron saint, depicted in armour with a plumed helmet, standing facing. In his right hand he holds an upright staff bearing a flag charged with a cross, while his left hand supports an oval shield bearing a rampant bear, the heraldic emblem of Appenzell. The legend S. MAURITIUS PATRONUS encircles the figure within a beaded border, rendered in a Baroque engraving style characteristic of early eighteenth-century Swiss cantonal coinage. |
