Obverse description A fully armored knight stands facing right in the field, the date divided to either side of the figure. The knight raises a sword in his right hand while his left arm supports a heraldic shield bearing the arms of Friesland. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, terminating with a mintmark whose position varies by emission. The overall style is characteristic of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Dutch provincial hammered gold coinage.
