| Obverse description | A dolphin swims to the left within the sickle-shaped (drepanon) harbor of Zancle, the curved shoreline rendered in careful relief and punctuated by several schematic square structures representing the city's warehouse buildings. The composition exploits the full flan, with the harbor outline forming a naturalistic frame around the central marine motif. The legend DΑΝΚ appears in archaic Greek characters along the inner curve of the harbor. The overall design is a celebrated example of early Sicilian die-cutting, combining topographic reference with elegant figural work. |

Zancle — the city's original Chalcidian name before the Samians seized it around 494 BC and the Messenians resettled it shortly after, renaming it Messana — controlled the straits between Sicily and the Italian mainland, and that position was the entire point. The dolphin-filled harbor that gave the city its name (zankle means "sickle" in the local dialect, describing the shape of the natural harbor) was the commercial chokepoint of the western Mediterranean.
This drachm predates the Samian occupation, placing it among the final issues of the Chalcidian foundation.
