Dyrrachion — the Greek colonial city on the Illyrian coast known to Romans as Dyrrachium — issued drachms through a magistrate-pair system, naming both a civic official and a secondary authority on each issue. The pairing of Leonidas and Lysionos places this coin within a period of intense monetary competition with the neighboring colony of Apollonia, whose nearly identical coinage circulated across the same Adriatic trade routes. Both cities produced such closely matched issues that ancient merchants almost certainly treated them as interchangeable.
