Dyrrachion — the Greek colony known to Romans as Dyrrachium, modern Durrës in Albania — sat astride one of the Adriatic's most critical trading corridors, and its coinage circulated far beyond Illyria proper. The drachms of this series, identified by the magistrate names Leonidas and Chalkidas, belong to a late phase of the city's independent silver output that persisted stubbornly even as Roman administrative control over the region tightened following the Third Macedonian War. Hoard evidence places these coins as far east as Apollonia and inland into the Macedonian interior.
