Additional information

Khusro II's first reign lasted barely two years before he was ousted by the general Bahram Chobin, who seized the throne as Bahram VI. Khusro fled to Byzantine territory and struck a deal with Emperor Maurice — military support in exchange for territorial concessions in Armenia and Mesopotamia. The restoration came in 591, and coins from this initial reign are accordingly scarce, struck across a narrow window before the civil war forced the mint output to collapse entirely.
