Additional information

Dyrrachion — the Greek city Rome knew as Dyrrachium — sat at the western terminus of the Via Egnatia, making it one of the most strategically trafficked ports on the Adriatic throughout the late Republic. The magistrate names inscribed on this series, Exephron and Asklapos, are among the locally appointed officials whose identities anchor the coin's date range but whose historical biographies are otherwise entirely lost. The city struck these drachms in enormous volume to service the constant movement of Roman troops and merchants crossing into Macedonia.
