| Obverse description | Radiate head of Helios facing three-quarters right, rendered in fine Hellenistic style with flowing curls of hair framing the face. The solar deity is depicted youthful and unbearded, with clearly modelled facial features including a straight nose and slightly parted lips. Prominent radiating spikes emanate dramatically from the crown of the head, identifying the figure as the sun god, patron deity of Rhodes. The relief is bold and well-struck, with the hair rendered in deep, swirling locks characteristic of the plintophoric series. The field is smooth and unlettered. |

By the mid-second century BC, Rhodes had already passed its commercial and political peak — the Roman declaration of Delos as a free port in 166 BC had devastated Rhodian trade revenues almost overnight, stripping the island of an estimated 85% of its harbor dues. The civic coinage continued, but under substantially reduced economic circumstances. Artemon served as the magistrate responsible for this issue, his name appearing as the guarantor of the emission under the longstanding Rhodian practice of naming individual officials on the coinage rather than collective civic authority.
