Additional information

Artavasdes II inherited the Armenian throne from Tigranes the Great in 55 BC and spent his reign navigating the collision between Rome and Parthia — ultimately choosing Parthia at precisely the wrong moment. When Crassus marched east in 53 BC, Artavasdes withdrew his promised cavalry support, a decision that almost certainly contributed to the catastrophe at Carrhae. Rome never forgot it. These drachms fall within the narrow window just before Mark Antony's punitive campaign forced Artavasdes into chains and eventual execution in Alexandria at Cleopatra's order, around 31 BC.
