Obverse description Draped bust of Ardashir I facing right, wearing a distinctive royal diadem with flowing ribbons; the hair is arranged into a large orb or globe at the top of the head, a hallmark of early Sasanian royal portraiture. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the characteristic frontal-facing Sasanian artistic style, with careful attention to the folds of the royal garments. A beaded border encircles the design. The royal Pahlavi legend runs around the bust in the field.
