| Obverse description | Square hammered flan bearing a standing elephant in profile facing right, rendered in low relief with characteristic Indo-Greek artistic style. The animal is depicted with naturalistic detail, its trunk lowered and legs firmly planted. The Greek legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΠΟΛΛΟΔΟΤΟΥ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ, reading 'King Apollodotos the Saviour', surrounds the central device along all four borders of the square flan. The overall design reflects the Hellenistic tradition adapted to the local coinage idiom of the Indo-Greek kingdom. |
