Apollodotos served as magistrate at Smyrna during a period when the city had recently come under Roman provincial organization following the dissolution of the Attalid kingdom in 133 BC. Smyrna was among the most loyal Greek cities to Rome during this transition — it had backed Rome as early as 195 BC — and its continued right to strike silver coinage reflected the privileged status the city enjoyed under the new provincial arrangement.
The Weber and de Luynes references place this among a well-documented but genuinely scarce magistrate series; individual named issues survive in small numbers across collections.
