| Reverse description | A sea-eagle, wings fully spread and feathers finely rendered in relief, perches upon and grips a dolphin swimming to the left; the eagle's head is turned downward toward its prey in a dynamic predatory pose. The legend ΑΠΟΛΛΩ is inscribed in Greek characters in the upper field to the right of the eagle, with the single letter Δ (a magistrate's or die-cutter's control mark) in the central field, and ΣΙΝΩ arranged along the lower exergual area beneath the dolphin. The composition fills the flan with confident Classical artistry, the dolphin's body tapering elegantly to the right. The entire design is rendered in high relief consistent with the hammered coinage of Sinope in the late fourth century BC. |
