Apollonia's drachms of this period were struck under named magistrates — here Aibatios and Chairenos — a practice that reflects the city's oligarchic administration rather than royal or dynastic authority. The colony, founded jointly by Corinth and Corcyra in the late seventh century, maintained remarkable monetary independence well into the first century BC, even as Rome tightened its grip on the eastern Adriatic following the Illyrian Wars.
